NEW! Finding Balance and Green Diet

Are you familiar with the Gunas? They aren't Disney characters, to be sure! Everything is made up of three essential qualities or energy, according to yoga. Rajas, tamas, and sattva are their names.

Rajas are the force of action, transformation, and movement. Rajas are the source of fire and passion. The daylight hours are likewise related to Rajasic energy. We clearly require rajasic energy to generate energy in order to successfully navigate our surroundings and lives. When we have too much rajasic energy, we may appear to the outside world to be very active, going go, do! Does this ring true for you? Burnout occurs when rajasic energy is maintained at a high level. The mind and body are overstimulated when rajas are out of equilibrium, the mind becomes restless, and you have a lot of unregulated ideas.

Spicy foods, fried foods, coffee/caffeinated beverages/stimulants/ fish, eggs, chocolate, and bitter, sour, dry, and salty meals are all rajasic foods. It is also deemed rajasic to eat in a hurry.

The tamas is the polar opposite of the rajas. Tamasic energy is linked to inactivity and inertia, as well as heaviness and darkness. When your tamas are out of balance, your ability to reason is hampered, and you may experience darker emotions like rage or greed. In the same way that rajasic energy is more prevalent during the day, tamasic energy is more prevalent at night. People who are extremely tamasic may appear sad or indolent. In general, tamasic illness conditions exist.

Meat, alcohol, cigarettes, onions, fermented foods Like vinegar or strong cheese, stale or overripe food, highly processed or chemically treated food are all examples of tamasic foods. Overeating is a tamasic behavior.

Sattva is energy that is in a balanced, green and harmonious state. Sattva is related to positive mental and emotional states of joy and intellect. A person with a lot of sattvic energy would appear to be very happy. Sattvic energy is also associated with healing states, and it is actively fostered in Ayurveda (yoga's sister science). Sattvic energy is strongest between the hours of light and darkness or sunset and dawn. Yoga asana and meditation are traditionally conducted at these times because a person on the yogic path is focused on achieving sattva.

Green, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, pure fruit juice, legumes, milk, butter, nuts, seeds, sprouted seeds, honey, green coffee and herbal teas are all sattvic foods.

It is critical to recognize that we all possess all three Gunas. While this is correct, we do tend to have a dominant guna. Can you figure out what yours is based on the previous descriptions? It is beneficial to be aware of this since knowing your predominant guna allows you to forecast how you will react to various life situations as well as identify your strengths and limitations. You'll be able to predict when you'll be thrown off balance and what you'll need to do to get back on track.

Do you practice yoga asanas (postures)? How do the gunas appear in this situation? Is your asana practice energizing and energizing? Was your practice slow and sluggish? Was it balanced or unbalanced?

It should be obvious by now that cultivating sattva in your life is crucial if you want to be well, happy, and live a balanced life. This can be accomplished by:

lowering the rajas and tamas
When you become aware of when you are out of balance, which guna appears to be the most prominent?
Increase the number of activities and surroundings that encourage optimistic thinking.
Eating a sattvic-oriented, healthy green diet
Several green coffee (subject for another article)
Pranayama (breathing exercises), asana (postures), and meditation are all part of the yoga practice.
